Wooly News ⎮#28

What a long hiatus, my last contribution to my Wooly news series was in March 2023, so 7 months.. Not that I had nothing to say, just that my life has been creeping in my head and I focused on the other series. Wooly News means I loosely keep an eye on the knitting and fibre communities and pick up things that are worth reporting about. This needs some mental space. The video and blog post also take a long time to edit and write, this needs more time than my regular Knitting Adventures for example.

This is not an excuse 🙂

Anyway, I’ve been missing this segment for a while now and hope I have enough content to make you happy, informed or entertained.

® Stephen West MKAL 2023 – Geogradient

Let’s begin with the elephant in the room, this is Steven West MKAL season. As I write, clue two has just been released. This year’s theme is Geogradient – if you think about geometric shapes and colours, it can lead to questionable symbols or representations. Which happened 10 days ago when clue one was released.

Not sure how the whole team let this slip through, and Steven promptly changed clue one to one of the alternate options he had published, removing the original clue one that evoked a WW2 hate symbol to many users. Think about it. 5761 projects as I write, this event aisre very popular, followed by people from all over the world, from many different backgrounds and cultures. Better double and triple check everything before going live.

You may not have seen the representation in the original clue one. When I first saw it, I thought this is strange he flirts with this, he did not give me thins impression. Turns out that he promptly replied, changing clue 1, being very apologetic (the pattern is 8.30€ on Ravelry, you can make the calculations of what is involved..) and very stressed out.

I hope everyone is able to move along and enjoys the MKAL I did not participate because 1- I have 2 main WIPs on my plate, 2- I would not have been able to keep up with the pace (which is not a real problem) and 3- I do not like all of his patterns. The only one I have already made long after it was released is Slipstravaganza

My Slipstravaganza by Stephen West
© Vertices Unite by Stephen West

I have a few of his MKAL patterns in his books, not sure there is one other that really appeals to me. I’ll wait for the finished shawl to decide whether I’ll make it or not, for now I do not think so. If I cast on any of his shawls, it will be Vertices Unite.

So be kind to everyone, and very careful with geometric shapes..

Free Patterns Highlights

Freeze Warning by YaYa Lovestoknit

As I see so many paid for patterns for simple knits such as little scarves (wink wink at my own free one), cowls, shrugs and such, I prefer to highlight free ones that perfectly fit the bill, that can be customised to your yarn, colour choices (mono block or with a colour pattern), size etc.

The Freeze Warning by YaYa Lovestoknit is a perfect example. An easy stitch pattern, suitable for coloured stripes, bulky yarn instructions that can easily be adapted, ribbed collar that will fit your neck etc. What is not to like ? It is in my “Want To Make” list, and I will make it at some point. Our friends from the Southern Hemisphere going to Spring and Summer can use colder and finer yarns for colder nights 🙂

Books, Magazines, Articles And Creators

The latest YouTube episode I watch from Roxane Richardson was about tech editors in the knitting community and how and why they are essential to people publishing patterns. I have always been interested in all the behind the scenes people that concur to a successful pattern, tech editors and test knitters. This is why I appreciate so much La Bien Aimée videos about her books where she invites creators and their test knitters.

The Knitting Pattern Writing Handbook by by Kristina McGrath & Sarah Walworth

In this episode, Roxane interviews Sarah Walworth and Kristina McGrath, authors of The Knitting Pattern Writing Handbook, and hosts of Tech Tip Talk.

What an interesting episode, what an interesting book, I preordered it and will report on it once I have it in my hands. Very knowledgeable people and eye opening on so many levels !

The book will be published on October 31, 2023, here are the references you can look for in your favorite bookstore : ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 1635866243 ; ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1635866247

Events

© Wool & Folks
© NY Sheep & Wool

Two of knitting events having world wide impact are taking place this week-end in New-York State. Many knitfluencers will be there and have already posted a lot of blog posts, Instagram posts, YouTube videos about their preparations, set ups, packing, projects, planned future acquisitions, tips for the events etc. You can follow them on all these social networks and there are most probably more that I do not even know about 🙂

First, Wool & Folks will take place on October 19th (for a warm-up) and 20th 2023, and then NY Sheep and Wool in Rhinebeck on October 19th to 23rd, 2023. There was a bit of confusion as the W&F location and parking situation was changed last minute. Many people go to both as they are located not too far away from each other, first W&F on the Friday, then Rhinebeck for the week-end. A whole set of Rhibebeck sweaters to look at, and now people even team up to knit the same sweater in different colours !

All in all, one of these events most knitters of the world know about, whether they want it or not 😺

© Journées Nationales de la Laine à Felletin

There is another event the week-end after Rhinebeck in France. Do you know about it ? It gathered over 20,000 people last year, from France and all over Europe : the Journées Nationales de la Laine à Felletin, on October 27th to 29th 2023. It has been going on for over 20 years now, and Frédérique from Atelier Pure Laine is going. Too bad I have to work ! There will be over 140 vendors, lots of exhibits, local yarn mills to visit (Filature Fonty and Filature Terrade) and tons of yarn from indy dyers to be drooling over. One day I’ll attend, on day.

Who Am I Knitting With ?

Most of the time, I report on shows, series or movies and such, that I watch while knitting during the evening. There is no series or shows really worth talking about for today, nothing that really captivated my attention and gave me happiness while watching. So there will be only a music report as music is a constant element of my life, from morning to night, except when I teach or am in meetings of course.

© Ali by Vieux Farka Touré And Khruangbin
Metallic Spheres by The Orb Featuring David Gilmour

Vieux Farka Touré and Khruangbin have published a collaboration, Ali. A total pleasure to my ears, please let me know if you also enjoy this kind of world music mixed with electronica. Their collaboration is a real fusion between their own two distinct worlds, they successfully bring their own things to make a new unique vibe and album. was so pleased to discovered it (it first aired in 2022).

On the other hand, I was impatiently wanting for Metallic Spheres, the new the album from The Orb And David Gilmour. Two of my favorite artists collaborating on an album, what a treat ! It was a huge deception. They play side by side, they do not talk to each other, it is “just” Gilmour’s guitar riffs on top of The Orb music and creation. No fusion, no dialog, they do not seem to bring anything to each other. They walk side by side, and I’ll pass. I won’t buy the CD. was a bit sad at first, then turned to Ali for some hapyness.

May your little stitches bring you joy and happiness, see ou next time !

Wooly Stories – The Yarn Gifted To Me – Part 1 : Nutiden by Höner och Eir

For a long while, I have been interested by the history of the yarn I am knitting or dream of knitting. In this process and my recent knitting history (I have been knitting for about 55 years), I have become more and more aware of treatments applied to the wool or the other fibres I am using. Part of my stash I have “accumulated” before this thought process and not all is treated in environment friendly facilities and some have had an awful carbon footprint to get to me, or both. I will use these fibres as they are is in my home, and for over a year and half and my no-buy project, I have been trying to spend my money where my mouth is.

I started to turn to sustainable, environmentally responsible, local farmers and producers. I do not say I am excluding all the rest, no, it has its purpose and place. I am not telling you what to do either, you do you and what is good or available to you. I prefer to know what I wear, what I eat, what air I breathe. First world problem or choices, you are going to tell me. Yes.

For about a year now, I have been educating myself about the origin and quality of the new yarn I buy. At the end of 2022 and mid-2023, three lovely subscribers of my YouTube channel sent me yarn. For my birthday and for having me try one of my yarn kryptonite in a destash process.

These gifts were a great surprise – I sent them some of this French mohair I love so much, from the Pyrénées or from Poitou, to thank them and because it brought me joy and happiness.

So there are several yarn brands or origins I would like to talk about, in a couple posts because all in one publication would make it too long. I had already started to gather my thoughts on Nutiden, so here it is, in no particular order.

Nutiden by Höner och Eir

© Höner och Eir website

This was one of my yarn kryptonite, the ones I am drooling over the pictures and projects I see on social media. A unique pre-wool yarn, produced by a small family company in Sweden, surrounded by much hype and a particular economical process. You have to be a member of their Patreon, where there are limited spots available, to be able to buy the yarn. They know how many customers they will have for a season, that allows them to control the production and have no waste as they always sell all of it every season. I get that. This model was what was keeping me away, drooling from a distance.

Once the members of the Patreon group have had early access to the web shop and made their purchases, it opens to the general public.

What caught my eyes and mind was their process to make the yarn plates. They document a lot of it on their Instagram account. A natural process, made outside when possible, with natural products (they use essential oils, if sensitive they recommend to leave the yarn outside for a few days), unique colours showing lots of depth and a charmed following crowd.

And I now have some in my hands !

After seing my YouTube video where I talked about my dream yarn and temptations in my no-buy process, one of the lovely yous offered to send me some of their Nutiden stash. On one side this person was reducing her own stash, that is huge in her own words, and at the same time she was offering me to knit with the yarn I was so tempted about. My own no-buy regulations were the only protection preventing me from making an online order.

Her message, offering to send a package, was a huge and pleasant surprise, I was not expecting anything like that at all. I was just sharing my thoughts process and never imagined it could inspire anyone and have such joyful consequences. Of course I offered to send some mohair even though it was not a question of one for one. The pleasure of giving is as intense to me as the pleasure of receiving. After sending my remaining skeins from my Cosy X by Hinterm Stein I even had the intense pleasure to choose some companion mohair in the Aulon Mohair Pyrénées farm this summer, that could bring the total to a sweater quantity. Unfortunately, mohair production I difficult due to the jam packed mill and factories schedules, so there is little to choose from, and small quantities.

I now understand the Nutiden yarn fame and hype. It is soft, even softer than what you can imagine, light, very light, offering a unique knitting experience. I had to learn to knit again as I now realize I like to have tension around my right finger (I do not continental knit, I am a picker). I needed to develop a whole different technique that is not completely intuitive yet. I have to think about each and every stitch, talk about a mindful process ! That said, the knitted fabric is a dream.

The pre-wool breaks just looking at it. Almost. It is quite convenient to spit-splice to add a new strand, or continue with the same if if broke. I had to knit a few rows before I understood how to work with it.

It took me some time to figure out what I wanted to do with this precious gift. A meaningful piece that would bear joy and positive vibes as I wear it.

The Fleur Shawl

Fleur by Espace Tricot

I casted on the Fleur shawl by Espace Tricot, as part of the #fleuralong KAL that Carmen and Jackie’s of Knitting A Good Yarn YouTube channel are hosting. I had the pattern in my library for a long time (it is free) and had forgotten about it. The KAL made it obvious.

This elongated crescent shawl is perfect. A simple and easy pattern, well written as always with Espace tricot, a perfect size, easy to wear and very convenient.

A project bearing positive feelings and lots of emotions. Yarn from a now online friend, a meditative knit (once I got the hang of it), a thoughtful knit with the bobbles, a beautiful free pattern, cuddles on my needles and for my soul. Once I have knit all my stash, I may get some more for myself.

All of that thanks to this amazing online community of knitters and makers. I am so happy to be part of it.

© Ravelry – Dancing Ribbons Pullover by Tanis Gray & Plucky Knitter

I am not sure where I saw this pattern first. Was it a YouTube video ? An email ? On Ravelry ? Very sorry, I have no recollection.. The modified “gingham style” motif was what caught my eye and attention. The turquoise-peach combination too I guess, although I love the monochromatic version too. An unusual colour work yoke, that is not easy to find nowadays, made with a worsted weight yarn that should knot quite fast.

I guess the little scarves train has not lost steam yet ! And I know when it has it will come back again at some point. The Soirée Scarf by Purl Soho has this little pointy elongated triangular shape that will remind you of some other patterns. 50g of a fingering weight yarn ball is enough, perfect for these single skeins or leftovers. The sample is in mulberry silk, you may want to use another cruelty free fibre. These small scarves are perfect to have handy in a bag for these little winds or colder places.

Trends & Echoes

I changed the title of this section a bit as I try not to prompt or enable everyone into too much trends or hype that won’t last. I am quite into a timeless process right now, and “Echoes” may be a better wording, please tell me !

Today, the echo chamber involves the little ruffles you can see on Dārta by Inese Sang, one of the patterns in La Bien Aimée Neons and Neutrals I recently talked about, and have in my own library.

© Laine Publishing – Dārta by Inese Sang
© Eweknit Toronto – Mar Tee by Claudia Quintanilla

Both patterns share the same inspiration, with different interpretations. The Mar Tee will be offered in both children and adult sizes and Eweknit will have a knit along once the pattern is published (available soon as I write this). Eweknit offers the pattern if you buy their kits, just so you know. You can sign up for the knit along on their own pattern pages (links just above). Claudia Quintanilla is the founder and owner of Eweknit.

As I have LBA’s book, if I feel in need of a ruffle top (which I am considering), I will go for Dārta. You may prefer the other little details on the Mar Tee. I am toying with the idea of a more feminine and delicate tee. We’ll see ! As always, inspiration is in the air and it is quite interesting to see it unravel before our eyes.

Yarn Companies and Stores

De Rerum Natura

© Antigone – De Rerum Natura Website

With Spring supposed to be around the corner in the Northern Hemisphere, you may be looking for lighter yarn and fabrics. If not to hard to knit on your hands, linen is a good candidate for fresh garments. De Rerum Natura has had a bit of difficulties sourcing organic flax as the world needs have exploded. They now have a partnership with Terre de Lin, a cooperative owned by all the people who work for it, from farmers to transformation and sales. No dangerous products or processes are involved, preserving the its “beautiful energy”. Antigone is close to a DK weight, so very polyvalent.

And just a mention for La Bien Aimée’s pop up shop in Paris that opened two days ago, on March 28th. You have seen it about everywhere, I was very glad to see the yellow windows and storefront again, after she closed her brick and mortar store a years or so ago.

Laine Publishing

Talking about Laine Publishing once again !

© Laine Publishing – Making memories

I am not shopping for children sizes patterns or idea, you may though ! From newborns to 10 year olds, Making Memories is available fro preorders, the release date is May 12th. 25 patterns with, I suppose, the usual “Laine touch” that I like much. All patterns are by Claudia Quintanilla, the founder ans owner of Ewekint Toronto, and a famous knitwear designer. The circle is complete, you know what I like !

Who Am I Knitting With ?

Shows

I finished “The Office” I was talking about in last Wooly News, and looked for other shows to follow while knitting in the evenings, when I do not feel like listening to music.

© Wikipedia – Star Trek Picard
© Wikipedia – Patrick Stewart

I had watched the first two Picard seasons out of being faithful to my young self who loved Star Trek, watched “Next Generation” series (and then the original series) while in the USA, and “Deep Space Nine” and the movies back here in France.

It was painfully convoluted and not that much interesting. I stuck with it, because I wanted to. But hey, what a drag for me. I do understand it was centred on Picard’s personality and story, with so many side stories, time travels, backwards, forwards, that it lost me. It had nothing to do even with the less interesting movies or series episodes.

I watched the 6 newest (season 3) episodes that aired after watching Supernatural and The Office, I am so enjoying it ! Next episode should be released the night my YouTube video goes up, and you can be sure I’ll be behind my screen. We are back on Star Trek tracks. Adventures, plots, fights, space travels, bad gals and guys, good gals and guys, new species, all the best ingredients for the best recipe. I do recommend you have a look if you did enjoy Star Trek at some point.

I also need to find some other shows, I am sorta browsing around for now.

Yodelice

© Wikipedia – Yodelice

Yodelice is a French Pop artist (he sings in English) who has a soft electronica side, a bit of rocky pace at times, and a deep voice that speaks to me. I saw him in 2014, at a music festival taking place 20 minutes away from me, after my young kids were so excited to see him. And I loved what I saw and heard, I stuck with him and have been listening to him ever since. Please give him a gentle ear 🙂

My Knitting Plans And Fantasies

This summer, during July and August, I visited three farms and yarn stores and bought yarn according to my yarn no-buy year guidelines (I allow myself to buy yarn in stores, given there are none next to me).

Now that I have all this beautiful stash, what are my plans or fantasies ?

Mohair Cardé From Mohair d’Aulon en Pyrénées

© Perennial Sweater by Norah Gaughan

First, with the blue mohair cardé from Mohair d’Aulon en Pyrénées I will knit a Perennial sweater by Norah Gaughan from La Bien Aimée Worsted yellow book. I love the yarn, its stitch definition and I really want to knit a pattern from Norah Gaughan after I ripped my last project out. I do not want to linger on such a “failure” or bad experiment, mostly because the cotton yarn did not go with the pattern and the charts were very small to read, even after taking a pic and printing it out as large as I could.

This time, I will follow one recommendation some one gave me in a comment on my YouTube channel : print it from a real Xerox big copier that can keep a good resolution even when copying on a large scale !

© Hide and Peak by Maxim Cyr
© Fields Of Gold by Isabella Clark

Second, the rest of the colours was to knit a Hide and Peak by Maxim Cyr that I’ve had in my queue for a long time. I wanted to knit the body in a dark grey colour, but they were out of stock (good for them !), so I bought the light brown one instead. I the mean time, Isabella Clark released the Fields Of Gold and the light browny beige Mohair cardé got an immediate reassign ! Fields of Gold it will be. The light blush pink, light grey and yellow will wait for another visit to the farm and the dark grey hopefully.

Fuzzy Mohair From La Ferme De L’Accroche Cœur

Ferme de l’Accroche Coeur

This was a new farm to me, that I had been following on Instagram since the beginning of the year. When I visited, I first contacted her and turns out she had just opened her brick and mortar shop in her farm the day before ! She will keep selling open markets. When I visited, I already had a project style in mind : knitting a Bohus type colour work sweater. I need to find a design that will fit my yarn and gauge now 😺

Wooly Wool From Laines À L’Ouest

Laines à l’Ouest
Laines à l’Ouest

After I spent some time in the Pyrénées and Poitou, I went back home for my last weekend before work. I decided to drive to Lessay in Cotentin, a 1.5h trip, and go to the Laines à l’Ouest shop. I could not see the sheep as they were in a barn due to the higher tides that flood their usual pasture. It is common here in Normandie.

A beautiful shop, a very friendly host and marvelous rustic yarns. I may have found my substitute to the one from Iceland I have been drooling over for quite some time.

I bought these two 1kg cones in the undyed white yellowish kind and the grey brownish one.

© Highland Thistle Sweater by Carolyn Holbrook
© Mare by Natasja Hornby

When I saw the grey one, I immediately assigned it to the Highland Thistle Sweater by Carolyn Holbrook. The right colour, the right yarn weight. I do not have a real plan for the whitish one other than a Mare by Natasja Hornby in combination with the grey one. I think I’ll use the very as the background couleur and the white as the accent one, as shown in a sample.

In both places I also got yarn for Rosemary Grant and shipped it to Australia (not talking about clearing customs for her..). She received it and likes it 😻 She also shipped some Australian yarn to me, so I guess this will be a swap, win-win 💙

Lots of creators, designers and editors are having donation operations for Ukraine, either to main organisations as Unicef and Red Cross (that I support too), to local chapters of these organisations or to local operations. There are too many to cite them all, I will just link to the ones that I already have recommended : the Red Cross or Unicef. If you are interested, you can check your favorite creators, websites or LYS, they most probably will have projects or links.

My own version

You may recall me knitting the Fresh Peonies Shawl when it was released as a mystery box by TreLiz for her birthday last July. This was when I just started my channel ! A very enjoyable knit and one of the shawls I wear most as it is very light and very warm. The shawl was knitted with a strand of fingering merino and a strand of lace mohair. Some parts are with the merino alone, some others with the lace mohair alone, creating an unusual texture.

The pattern has just been release on Ravelry so you can buy it individually. It was not possible before as the pattern had been release by email on TreLiz Birthday, to people who had bought the box.

Free Pattern Highlight

© Espace Tricot

I had the intension to highlight the Warm-up Sweater from Espace Tricot last time but settled on a 3D Purl Soho Wrap. As we say in French “ce n’est que partie remise” – it was only a postponement. Not sure of the translation or the use of this sentence.. The Warm-up Sweater is a very basic one, with a nice sweatshirt and relaxed feeling. It is knitted with Aran weight yarn, but I am sure we can adjust for a wide variety of yarns as they are 12 sizes. You can crop and adjust it or choose a more boxy fit, which I like.

To say, I have already knitted Espace Tricot patterns and they are very well written and edited, a professional work at no charge. What else ?

Not quite a tutorial, an information. Making Stories have a nice ressource page on their website that you may want to keep in your bookmarks. If you are subscribed to their mailing list, you should have received a link to a text document where additional resources are linked. A keeper

gansey type sweaters

At least two “main” designers are releasing sweater patterns with a lot of different textured stitch motifs that could be quite engaging : Stephen West’s Dustland Sweater and Petite Knit’s Ingrid Sweater. To some extend, these sweaters show, at least to me, a lineage with Gansey type sweaters, one good example would be a pattern that has been released last year in a book from Di Gilpin & Sheila Greenwell in The Gansey Knitting Sourcebook. (Di Gilpin is currently donating all pattern sales to the Red Cross).

If you look for Gansey patterns, you will find many, even free ones, for any type of yarn and gauge. I do have several books on the history of Gansey sweaters, early patterns, and I never decided myself to dive into them other than for daydreams. Maybe now is the time.

Yarn Companies and Stores

Aimée from La Bien Aimée is continuing her USA tour with her Worsted Hello Book. You can follow her adventures, encounters, events and friendly meetings on Instagram. When you cannot travel, and if it makes you happy, you can use a proxy ! I am most interested in people and places she visited because I know it will fuel her creativity, and then mine in return. I also get to have glimpses of places in the USA that a lot of people talk about on a regular basis. Nice.

Another book, and there is still one more 🙀 How to handle my temptation ! At least this one is on pre-order, so no rush. Meiju K-P is a designer from Finland who’s sweet spot lays with lace, lots of lace. You can have a preview of the different patterns on the Laine Magazine dedicated page for the pre-order. Beautiful designs in a beautiful book, I like Laine Publications, the texture of the books, the smell of their pages, the fact they are study and reliable books. My only remark would be to be able to get a download code to a PDF that would suit my ageing eyes better 🙂

The Badger And Bloom pattern from Anne Venstzel popped up in my Instagram feed and immediately caught my attention : I have the Yellow Mohair from the Aulon Farm and the Sari thread from Filature Fonty that were just waiting for a pattern idea ! This colour work pattern with the yellow body is just what I was waiting for. Here you go, this one is on my list and I have the yarn in my stash. Do I need another pattern that has the same look and feel ? May be. Do you ? 😺

Definitively a creator that I will keep in my list when I want a pattern with yarn I have in my stash.

La Bien Aimee Knit Night

Latest knit night from LBA just took place last night (February 15, 2022) as I am writing and the YouTube recording is not yet published. She hosted Norah Gaughan and Andrea Mowry and this will be the last knit night about her “Worsted” Yellow Book. Always so interesting and informative, where she showed the future Corrie Confetti on a very dark blue base. Stunning as always ! Blue being my black, I will have a hard time to resist. She is designing a stripped sweater with the future Corrie Confetti in blue and bright pink contrast colour. And as always the test knitters where invited, their perspective is so interesting. They discussed what a test knit is made of and how to become a test knitter.

© La Bien Aimée on YouTube

I did not talk about the previous knit night that took place on February 4th, 2022, as it took place a few hours before I post my latest Wooly News that I recorded on February 2nd. She hosted Thien Kieu Lam and Sylvia Watts Cherry. Once again, so nice to know there iconic designers better, they life story and their designing process. Aimée was wearing a unique version of the Amina Sweater by Sylvia. It is on my list as I like designs in pieces, that give the structure I like to garments. Another great episode where you get to see a bit more of the Framboise Corrie Confetti in action held with different mohair tones.

What is new is that you can now get the pattern as a single one, and not in the Issue 35 from Pompom Magazine. The book is out of print and you can get digital copies only from the Pompom website or from Ravelry. If you are subscribed to Olga’s mailing list, you’ll find a code for 20% off.

Another monster shawl that my find its way to my queue or yours 😺

Free Pattern

Missmarple scarf from SusanneS-vV

After a complicated free pattern promotion last week, this is a much easier one. I had it for about two years in my library (my downloaded file is from Feb 2020) and had forgotten about it. Not long ago, I ran a search on Ravelry to prop up small scarves you can tie up the way MissMarple is, and I sorta remembered having a pattern in my library but for some reasons could not fin it..

© SusanneS-vV

I had placed another similar pattern in my queue but was not that certain I wanted to knit it. Irene, one of the beautiful ladies over at the 3 Ply Podcast just showed her MissMarple Scarf and, looking for it, not only did I find the one pattern I had in mind, but realised it was in my library and in my computer 🙀

Well, it is now in my queue and will probably fit in your 😺

Tutorial and New Word of the Day : Nostepinne

Vincent Williams (visuvios_crafts on Instagram) had me look for a word in one of his latest Instagram posts ; Nostepinne. I did not know that word, although I had already seen some here and there. A nice tool for winding yarn that I may add to my want list for this end of the year !

Go to the second pic to see it in action to wind yarn by hand. I usually use the cardboard roll from an empty kitchen paper roll, that could be a nice addition to my tools at some point 🙂

One tip I got from the video : wind the yarn 5 times before rotating the roll or stick. I did that on my latest cake, works nicely and is a bit easier on my hands.

Interviews And Knit Night

21 Hats Podcast on changing the face of the yarn industry

Let me start with what I usually finish with, the link to the Youtube interview of Felicia Eve, Gay Glasspie and Adella Colvin : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1Mgpc79H4s

It may be just enough for you if you want to spend another hour and a half filled with bright and smart conversation about the finer industry and influencers world. Amazing stories, sad ones, embarrassing ones, a lesson of life, friendship, community success (on how a whole community was able to raise twice as much that was needed to help Felicia to keep her store, in half a day), hard success, and most of all an optimistic message. most probably because that was the last question 🙂

Have a watch, have a listen, have a thought, have an understanding.

Selma from Little big knits raising money – the community is amazing

Selma decided the proceeds of her West Village Skirt pattern would go towards raising money for a charity (sorry, I did not grasp which one, you can watch the begging of her podcast episode below). It allowed her to raise $2700 which is amazing. Another community success story 💛

la bien aimée virtual knit night with les garçons

Another so enjoyable knit night that I unfortunately I could not follow live as I was at work. This time, LBA had invited Les Garçons, Maxim Cyr and Vincent Deslandes with whom she collaborates on a regular basis. Maxim has designed the Yesteryears sweater for the Worsted Book and it was another very nice moment when the test knitters were showcased and talked about their relationships with either Les Garçons, La Bien Aimée or both.

Aimée even sneak peaked the next Corie Confetti line in the Framboise colour. I won’t be much tempted as the bright pinks are not much of my choices for my wardrobe. I think I can skip the release without the regrets I had for the yellow or the grey first two editions.

You can watch the replay on LBA YouTube channel : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZbl1Ld6178&t=1s

As a side note, Les Garçons were looking for an assistant, so may be check their Instagram or website to see if the position is still available. Of course, you will have to be located in Montreal !

Book

When I first saw the book, I really wanted to preorder it. Being in a Yarn-No-Buy-Year with guidelines for everything fibre related, I did not buy it when it was in pre-order. It is now sold out, so I did not get it. I think I will miss it and look for reprints. You can browse and buy all of the 13 patterns from the book on its Ravelry page.

Patterns

orbits pattern from Rachel Illsley (unwind-knitwear) Illsley (

© Rachel Illsley

Orbits was released last November, I had seen it on Rachel Illsley’s Instagram account where she is unwind_knitwear. What placed it under my radar was the interpretation that Melissa Littlefield (knittingthestash on Instagram and Ravelry)) showed on her YouTube channel. The darker background with the lighter contrast colour made all the difference to me and I have to admit I had not looked at the different projects for Orbits.

What interested me is the extension of the colour work past the yoke, to the body and the sleeves. I know, there are many fair isle patterns that are all over sweaters or cardigans, this one has something special, a monochrome light palette, associated to a delicate and aerial pattern.

Rachel Illsley is starting a sale this Friday, for all of her patterns, until next Friday, so for a week. If you are on a no buy year, please look away, I will most certainly buy the pattern as the one buy for this month. My stash candidate will be all these beautiful HolstGarn yarns I was so desperate I bought at the end of last year. I knew I was going to come across a pattern or two 😺

Orlane Sucche new sweater Pattern

© Orlane Sucche

Orlane Sucche is a French designer from Lille, and is tete_beche on Instagram. She released a beautiful cable sweater, Letti. Created with a bulky yarn and the cables I like, this sweater should knit quickly before the cold is over, at least here in the northern hemisphere, or could be on your list for next winter. She choose a beautiful mossy green that caught my eye, looks like I am on the green train with my recent FOs 😸

Once on her page, you can have a look at her other designs, she is very eclectic and if a bulky cabled sweater is not your gem, you may find something that is.

Sari_n Winter Capsule and call for tests

Sari Nordlund is a prolific designer and I have a three of her patterns in my queue (two on Ravelry and one from the Amirisu 23 – Fall/Winter 2021). She released a winter capsule of four designs, three of which are on Ravelry in the January 2022 Collection and the additional Vargö dog sweater being a separate item. I love her designs and am always curious of her new releases. I may pass on that one for now, but who knows in the future.

© Sari Nordlund

She currently has a call for four additional tests in her Ravelry group and I have to say I will most probably get the Marzipan Pullover pattern, another cable design that is very appealing to me.

WoolY Worm Head Turbine Hat

© WoolyWormHead

As often, this is an older release (2010) that came across my Instagram feed. WoolyWormHead is, as per her Ravelry description, a hat architect and, well, most certainly is ! Her patterns and constructions are very original such as these horizontal cables that spiralling around the head, from the bottom up, in the Turbine Hat. Please check her Ravelry portfolio (link above), her Instagram or her website for inspiration and designs you will not find anywhere else.

Snowball Lace by Mari-Liis Hirv

© Mari-Liis Hire

What a beautiful sport weight lace shawl (you may use other yarn bases, resulting in a different sized shawl). Beware, these are charted instructions only that you can download separately (link in pattern). Bubbles or beads, delicate lace pattern, may be venture into this pattern if you have been eyeballing all these expensive patterns or books. I have already highlighted Mari-Liis in a previous blog post and YouTube episode (she releases stitch patterns by email), this one is on my dream list 😻

Balaclava : Even in Le Monde !

I have seen so many people knitting balaclavas ! I even have one in my queue, just waiting for some of my time ! This trend avec made it to one of the magazines from Le Monde. Of course, no knitting pattern here, rather items you can buy, some of them being on the most expensive side, from famous clothes designers or luxury houses.

m-magasine on Instagram

A bit regressive, we used to wear them as children here in France, a bit trendy during the winter sports season, that is the current “chic” accessory you need to have in your collection !

And as Jakie from Cady Jax Knits said it in one of their episode, each sweater should have its detachable hood. Here you go ! A trendy useful addition to your sweater collection and a good way to use the leftovers (or what remains after knitting a sweater if you, as I do, always buy more than what you need).

Yarn Companies and Stores

Holst Garn Revisits the SuperSoft line

© Holst Garn

Just a heads up ! Some of the Supersoft colours are being retired and marked as “Redundant” on their website. Many are already sold out, some are in very low quantities, so if you were looking for these colours and are able to buy them, now is the time.

yarnz is closing 😦

© Yarnz.eu

This is where my sons bought me the Elvan Shawl yarn and patters for Christmas in 2020, this is where I got the Kokon Aran Tie Dye for my first Lawrenson Sweater, this is where I got the Kokon Aran Indigo I still have in my stash (3 skeins from two different dye lots) and we have exchanged quite a few nice emails at this time with Michèle. I have a pleasant story with them. She explains she has life issues, she has been open about them on her Instagram account.

If you are located in Europe, this was a place to get some of the luxury yarns some people talk about or highlight in their YouTube channels. I wanted to be part of this game, this is how I found Yarnz. I know how futile this is, I also chose to purchase from a European sore. I am sad.

Starting February 01, they will have a big sale on their website (please look away if you are on a yarn no-buy !). My first serious test for my own yarn no-buy, some of their yarn is already discounted and so tempting. Will I regret not buying any ?

Michèle adds she will not discount the prices too much, the yarns are too beautiful and she rather knits what remains. Another sign of how precious she is, wishing her to find happiness and balance 💛

Books, Magazines, Articles And Creators

Roxane Richardson

I would like to thank Wanda who commented on my previous Youtube episode. She pointed me to Roxane Richardson. As Wanda wrote :

She provides fascinating information on many knitting & textile topics – both historical and contemporary

Indeed ! I do not know why I had never seen her channel, this is a mine of knowledge and information, and her digging into the pattern construction is so educational in a very simple and accessible way, yet in a format that could be a university class. I will be enjoying her future content and am already browsing and saving some of her past episodes.

Brandi Cheyenne Harper Interview By Modern Daily Knitting

© Modern Daily Knitting

A very nice interview with a special and kind eye on Brandi Cheyenne Harper’s work and environment. Please have a read for yourself, as inspirational as her book, a little sneak pick at a little (or big) part of her life ans who she is. If you have not already ordered the book and err on the dying side, this can give you an idea of what you will find in it, aside from the patterns of course.

La Bien aimee Knit Night – Friday Jan 14 2022 and worsted french edition

© La Bien Aimée

The knit night was last Friday, I enjoyed the first one I attended before the Holidays so much that I set a reminded in my agenda to be able to attend. It starts at 7PM my time (Paris time, UTC+1) and sometimes my work day is not over. But I made managed to be off work and home by the time it started 🙂

This session was with Nancy Merchant and Steven West who designed patterns for her Worsted book – which is going to be released in French around mid-February, pre-orders are open.

Aside from the interesting and smart talk on their design process, the patterns they created for the Worsted book, their knitting history, their relations to different techniques, what I enjoy may be the most in these events is the way Aimée features test knitters. They are such a part of the creative process that leads to publishing a pattern, and very often forgotten from the spotlights. Their own inputs are of high interest and many of them are really funny and high spirits. It was such a surprise to me to see Natasja Hornby, who is moonstruck_knits on Instagram or Moonstruckmermaid on Ravelry, was a test knitter for Nancy Merchant. She is such an established designer.

What I did appreciate much is how Natasja said that test knitting is a learning process for her (in addition to work with another designer) and an opportunity to see how other people work. This is so interesting to me, coming from a very competitive research world where knowing something others do not is very often seen as an “advantage” over ” your colleagues or fellow competitors”. I am so uncomfortable working like that, I sorta moved to other parts of science and academia so that I could clearly work with and for the community. Such a refreshing part of the knit night, an opportunity to believe in humanity again 😺 I will for sure make everything possible to attend the next one.

Patterns

Vikky Perkins

© Vicky Perkins
© Vicky Perkins

I’m not sure why I have not talked about Vikky Perkins sooner. Her patterns are amazing, and all of them are free. She currently has over 130 designs in her Ravelry portfolio. I first got intrigued by medieval looking colour works. She mainly created cowls, although she also has created scarves. You should for sure have a look, if you like colour work and this style. She has other more subdued colours, although you can pick any pattern and use low contrasts and achieve the same look and feel 🙂

the Avena sweater pattern is out

© Jennifer Steinglass

I already mentioned two Wooly News ago that Jennifer Steingass, Knit.Love.Wool on Instagram and lovewool-knits on Ravelry wad going to release a new pattern. It is now out under the Avena Sweater name. If you check the Ravelry page or the avenasweater hashtag on Instagram, you will see so many interesting variations, using self changing colour gradient yarns or with a fade, stunning ! I am officially in love.

KAL

And Sew On KAL for first something

I found Lisa not that long ago and from what she publishes on YouTube, I think we have. a lot in common 🙂 I enjoy watching and listening to her. She recently launched a KAL in partnership with another YouTuber, you will find the details in her description box.

The KAL is for “things” that we make for the first time. I like the idea ! I may or may not follow along as the KAL closes on February 1st, 2022, and I am not sur I will have enough time to finish something by then. Anyway, there are two techniques that are waiting for my first attempt : brioche and steeking. I have one brioche project in mind, I may get to it, I may not ! I have not yet dared to venture into the world of steeking.

I am sure both techniques look more impressive from a distance.. I will need some more mental space before I cast on a project with some heavy novelties.

If you are interested, you can enter and follow #knittingfirstskal on Instagram after you watch her introductory video on YouTube : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmZ8nLhkWDk.

Yarn Companies and Stores

Aimée from La Bien Aimée, she is so productive, has launched a submission call for a new book. It is all about design and yarn. The book will also be in collaboration with Laine Publishing and is scheduled to come out in Fall 2022. What she is looking for is projects that feature different yarn bases, in particular associations her yarns with other brands and yarn producers. What a cool idea 🙂

If you are interested, all the details are on : https://www.labienaimee.com/pages/submission-page-mixing-bases, and you need to submit before January 10th, 2022.

Talking about La bien Aimée, her Worsted book will be translated in French (February 2022) and Japanese (Spring 2022. An errata has been published on her website, the corrections will be into the second print sometime between the end of Winter and Spring 2022.

This coming December 17th, she will host a virtual knit night (7PM Paris time). The details are in her newsletter, that is a good reason to subscribe !

Knitting for radical self care : a modern guide from Brandi cheyenne harper

© Brandi Cheyenne harper

The title jumped at me when I saw it, not sure where.. I must have got the information from someone online because I just checked and I was not subscribed to Brandi Cheyenne Harper’s Instagram account.. Now I am ! It will remain a mystery and I thank you, whoever you are, human or algorithm, who directed me to this book. I think I preordered on a big world company and it has arrived last week.

Aside from techniques and patterns (I think I’ll knot one or two), I am much drawn to her wait of associating knitting with meditation. The whole book is food for thoughts to me, and a source of joy, self-reflexion, encouragements (no, you are not alone) and a very interesting angle of view on Life, the Universe and Everything, kinda my 42 🙂

I like to read a bit at random an pick up on what she wrote, each time I can relate. As much as I like book, this one will have a particular place.

You can find all the details on her website : https://www.brandicheyenneharper.com/home

Finished Objects : The Silata Scarves Are Finally Done !

Blue is for Théo and Grey for Samuel

If you have been following, I had a hard time knitting the scarves. I had decided to knit two at a time as I do not like to knit twice the same pattern. After knitting about ⅓ of each scarf, it stated to get very heavy and I was struggling. I did not see my progress and was not having a nice time. I think I am a monogamous knitted because I like to see things done. I had the feeling to knit at snail pace as we would say in French 🙂

So, after Emma commented on my YouTube Podcast where I was talking about it, with her gentle suggestion, I decided to separate the two projects. You know, when sometime you think of doing something but do not dare doing it because it would change your plans and a friend’s gentle nudge is enough for you to jump and do it ? That is was happened. I am very grateful to Emma, thank you so much !

After separating the two, placing one on The Knitting Barber cord I recently got, I realised that was exactly what I needed and I literally flew through the remaining ⅔ of the project. I knitted one full repeat alternating scarves, so I finished them together.

As I anticipated after knitting the first repeat, I needed the extra yarn. The Fonty Polaire is a perfect match for the recommended yarn, I got gauge on both my swatch and the pattern with the recommended needle size (also recommended on the yarn label), but needed 11 balls of yarn instead of the 6 they recommend.. The yardage and weight per ball is exactly the same. I do not understand but I managed to get the remaining 5 skeins from the blue dye lot, woot !

I really love the ridges such as the ones you can see on wet sand after the sea has gone away, I like the vibes it gives me. The fabric is soft and airy, and very warm. I am sure my two eldest sons will be pleased.

Now is time for weaving ends in and packing presents, I love that too 🌞😺
